Microsoft Word is the world’s leading word processing application, and documents created in the program are saved in a proprietary format. Even though these .docx or .doc files are native to Word, it is possible to open them without owning the program. Free online tools and applications allow you not only to open Word documents but to edit them as well.
Open with Google Docs
1.Navigate to docs.google.com in your Web browser. Log in with your Google account. If you do not have a Gmail address or some other type of Google account, click the “Create an account” link. Once you create your account, log in.
2.Click the 'Upload' button, whose icon looks like a hard drive with an upward-pointing arrow. Select “Files” from the drop-down list to open an Explorer dialog that helps you navigate to the location of the Word document on your computer.
3.Double-click the filename to upload it. In the 'Upload Settings' dialog that appears, check the box next to “Convert documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and drawings to the corresponding Google Docs format.”
4.Click “Start upload.” When the document is finished uploaded an “Upload complete dialog” will appear on your screen. Click the “x” in the right hand corner of the dialog to close it. Your document will appear in a list with a “W” icon next to it to let you know it is a Word document. Click on the document name or the icon and your document will open for editing.
Open with Zoho Writer
1.Navigate to writer.zoho.com in your Web browser. Log in to Zoho. You can use your Google, Yahoo! or Facebook account to log in or create a new account free. The Zoho interface resembles a standard word processor layout.
2.Click “File” and select “Import” from the drop-down menu. Choose “Import File.” Click the “Browse” button to find the document on your computer.
3.Double-click the document when you find it and then click “Import.” The imported Word document will appear in a new tab.
Open with Office.com
1.Navigate to office.com. Click the Word icon in the 'Select a Web App to create your document” section.
2.Sign in to Microsoft SkyDrive with your Windows Live ID on the next screen. If you do not have an ID, you can click the “Sign up” button to create one.
3.Click the “Add files” link. Find the Word document on your computer in the file upload browser that appears. Double-click the document to add it to your SkyDrive list of documents on your screen. Click the name of the document once to open it. You can view and edit text with a limited set of formatting, image and table features.
Tip
- If you prefer to use a desktop program to open Word documents, you have several free and for-pay options, including the Writer apps in open-source, free, multiplatform OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice, Apple's iWork Pages for Macs, and Corel WordPerfect.
Warning
- Extensive formatting such as tables, paragraph styles and unusual fonts may be lost if you open a Word document in another program.
